Yunus Centre Press Release (October 08, 2018)
On October 3rd the Germans celebrate a very important event in the history of Germany and a very significant event in the history of the world. On this day German people have shown that a revolution doesn't always need to be a stage for violence. It can be achieved through peace as well. Honoring this memorable day Professor Yunus was invited to speak at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin which was covered by a photo installation made by the international acknowledged artist JR. He was the only keynote speaker at this musical celebration.
The ceremony was made up of cultural performances by popular German artists and was concluded by Nobel Laureate Professor Yunus delivering the keynote speech at the event, in front of a huge crowd of 600,000 people at the Brandenburg Gate, and another half a million people gathered at various focal points in various cities of Germany . His speech rounded off the event and was followed up by grand display of fireworks that lit up the sky to celebrate this historical day.
In his moving speech Professor Yunus said,
“Today we are celebrating a very important event in the history of Germany and also in the history of the world. On this day German people have shown that a peaceful revolution is possible.
We agree:
That peace is threatened by unjust economic, social and political order, absence of democracy, environmental degradation and absence of human rights;
We agree:
That social justice is a must to prevent the society from radicalism;
We agree:
That poverty is caused by the absence of social justice.
Since we agree, we must act together.
Extreme concentration of wealth in fewer and fewer hands caused by existing economic system violates the fundamentals of social justice. Unless this inbuilt systemic flaw is corrected it will generate social upheaval.
As an attempt to address this flaw I created the concept of social business, a business concept which is based not on profit motive, but on empathy and global citizenship. It creates non-dividend companies dedicated to solving human problems.
It will reduce the social and environmental injustices including the injustice of wealth concentration.
Good economic theory must give the people the environment to live in peace. The present economic system does not provide that.
We need new concepts and new practices. We need to build a new economic framework to build a new civilization based social justice and human values. On this important day of celebration let us make up our minds to focus on creating the new civilization with social justice and peace, and promise to achieve it whatever it takes.
Only with you, we can make it.
Let us make it together.
Thank you.”
